Marndadee Heritage River Village, Thailand

Chiang Mai, Thailand

by Benjamin Coren | November 2015

"Marndadee Heritage River Village is a peaceful and relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city and at a stone's throw out of Chiang Mai, it’s a welcome retreat. It’s a great escape and a perfect starting point to explore northern Thailand."

THE BACKGROUND: This stunning boutique hotel opened in November 2014 and currently has 23 (soon to rise to 36) unique rooms. 80% of the furnishings and décor in the hotel are antique, giving every room an individual touch.

THE LOCATION: Peacefully located on the Ping River on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, the property is around eight miles from the airport. The hotel is surrounded by forest, a small village and a handful of local temples, making it perfect for those looking for a slower pace.

THE ROOM: The hotel is divided into three locations: the rice barn villa, lanna colonial and sino colonial. I stayed in the ‘Mae Nang’ room in the lanna colonial building. This luxury room featured a twin bed with a huge terrace wrapping around the exterior of the building and a large shower room. As with many Thai homes, guests are required to remove shoes before entering the building, however there is a storage box outside. The décor was a delight and lovers of antiques and art will enjoy exploring all the unique pieces around the property.

KEY FACILITIES: The hotel has a non-chlorinated mineral pool and a Jacuzzi overlooking the river. The Ploenchit Spa has a steam room and Jacuzzi, plus various Thai and aromatic massages on the menu. There is wifi throughout. The hotel’s bike hire is recommended to explore the area’s markets and temples.

THE RESTAURANTS/BARS: The main dining restaurant, Marnda Brasserie, features a covered balcony with great views over the river. Indoors, the restaurant showcases more fine art and antiques curated by the owners. The executive chef specialises in Thai fusion and local dishes. Recommended dishes include Tabtim fish in wild betel leaves. The hotel also has a river-view terrace where guests can enjoy a drink or dine.

THE RATES: Rates: from 4,000 baht (approximately, £75) per night.
