Checking out

Avani Riverside, Bangkok, Thailand

by Julie Baxter | January 2017

"This is a contemporary hotel with a funky look and a great attitude. The brand concept is to offer casual, relaxed but amazing service and the staff are clearly onboard. No formal suits, but lilac and white uniforms or even shorts and colourful socks. Staff treat you like an old friend and formal hospitality has been replaced with a genuine, smiley ‘can do’ approach which quickly makes you feel at home."

THE BACKGROUND: Opened in August last year, this Avani flagship property epitomises a brand that puts the focus on its guests by offering informal, go-as-you-please facilities and services in a contemporary and user-friendly way.

THE LOCATION: The hotel is set back from the bustling Chao Phraya River and connected to sister property the Anantara. A free shuttle boat links it to a central pier for connections to key sites, which means guests avoid the hassle of Bangkok’s congested roads and can discover a more relaxed side to this frenetic city.

THE ROOM: All bedrooms and public areas have fabulous river views and high windows to make the most of them. The style is light and modern, with the view and the large bed making the biggest impression. The bathroom includes a large walk-in shower, while a storage area alongside the sink provides a kind of dressing area.

RESTAURANTS/BARS: Avani is committed to ‘honest’ food which includes its own on-site hydroponics herb and salad farm, with any surplus going to local good causes. Breakfast and lunch is served in the Skyline restaurant on the eleventh floor, where there is also a Long Bar for drinks, and the Pantry, for takeaway snacks, wraps and cakes. On the 26th floor the Attitude Restaurant and Infinity Bar offer expansive, spectacular views.

FACILITIES: Entering on the ground floor, guests are referred immediately to floor 11, which is the ‘lifestyle’ hub of the hotel with a bright, open-plan reception lounge and F&B options. On the top floor there is an infinity pool looking out over the city, plus a gym and spa.

THE RATES: A three-night stay in an entry Andaz Queen room in May 2017 starts from £1,321.

THE DETAILS: A River View room starts from around £120 a night, including breakfast. A: 257 Charoennakom Road, Thonburi, Bangkok. T: +662 431 9100 W: E:
